After eating a very large rock in the Mojave on my recent trip, I continue to sort out the ramifications. Broken rim and cut (but not leaking air) sidewall were immediately obvious. Also apparent was a need for an alignment.
After throwing it on the rack at the alignment shop they were unable to adjust for camber due to a bent alignment cam pin. This is a pin (actually 8 per side) that secures the alignment cams in place on the Lower Control Arm bracket. The pins are apparently made of aluminum and press into the front and back frame brackets for the LCA. Mine was bent significantly and pushed in slightly. My guess is that since these are replaceable they were possibly designed to fail (like a fuse) in extreme events. I could also be very wrong about that!
The fun fact in this is they don’t seem to exist in Fords parts catalog! After researching on other forums and then confirming with a local Bronco expert I was able to determine that GM alignment cam pins will work for Broncos. They can be found using SPC part # 86326.
About $37 including tax and shipping for 8 pins. Hopefully a lifetime supply.
I’ll post more once I receive and install the pins, but it looks pretty straight forward. Jack up the corner, remove wheel, remove front and back bolts that secure the inner side of the lower control arm then press out and press in the new pin. Reassemble and head for an alignment. Thank god I bought the 3 year alignment all you can eat buffet!
Pressing in and out seems to be the biggest unknown, but it looks like a clamp and appropriately sized sockets should do the trick. We’ll see!
Passenger side good pin
Drivers side bent pin
Here you see the pin head has been pressed out slightly and part of my foot
