Your opinions please. Cold start then wait a minute give it some gas then goes away. 4500 miles Time to take to the dealership? Advise who has had this same problem please. Peace JB

Are you thinking this the dreaded Cam Phaser issue? It’s my understanding that it goes away after just a few seconds after a cold start. I think you have something else. And, based on the audio, it sounds like maybe something interfering with the fan blades…

Good luck on the fix & keep us posted. 👍🏼

That sounds like a loose skid plate. Did you have a recent oil change?

Agreed. Definitely not a cam phaser. I've had that issue twice on various rigs. Agree it sounds like a heat shield, skid plate, etc... that needs a tighten...

can you elaborate on the cam phaser issue please? I just got back from a trip to Mammoth and mine is doing something when i start it up. only lasts a few seconds and then goes to normal again. sounds like a knocking or brief rattling. I came to post this question and saw your reply.

In this thread below is a couple short video's of the CAM Phaser rattle.

Unfortunately, based on your description, it sounds like you may be a victim… sorry!

ugh! after watching a few videos, it does sound like I am a victim of this. Any idea what the cause of this is? I didn't do anything crazy driving it. Is the fix really an engine replacement as I read in the thread with the videos?

I know 1 person that used an oil additive that is a stiction eliminator product and it solved his cam phaser rattle. Ford does not recommend any oil additives so, if you go this route, caveat emptor. (although, personally, I would likely try this before a motor replaced).

I am trying to find the name of the actual product - please hold…

it's caused when the motor is cold and has sat over night. basically the oil is in the pan and not the motor and when you start it up the cam phasers fibrillate until oil reaches them and enough pressure exists to get them moving properly. (that's a VERY rudimentary explanation). once the oil pressure builds and the cam phasers (think sprocket on the top end of the timing chains) start working properly the noise goes away. if it gets too bad you will have catastrophic engine failure. if you take it into ford they will replace the phasers under warranty (i've done it twice) and your motor is fine. it will take them a few weeks to do the job. i was able to negotiate a free loaner vehicle so that helped. sorry for the news but there is a fix and i've had no issues with mine post fix. one was an '18 f150 and now has 140K on the motor and no more issues after phaser replacement. good luck!!

FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

I am told that 8 ounces of Hot Shots 3 Friction Reducer added to the engine oil corrected the cam phaser issue.

Per my previous post, Ford does not approve any oil additives and I have not tried this personally but have witnessed positive results. YMMV

thanks for this info. I took mine into South Bay Ford in CA today, hoping to hear back on a loaner tomorrow and an estimated time fix. Sounds like they will be getting me a loaner but that isn't confirmed yet.

My 23 raptor bronco does same on cold start and I don't start every day, I use Royal purple HPS 5-20 o might go to o-15 in m in the North East CT and sits in cold garage, when I start with my phone 📱 I dont get that tiny tap sound. Do you have the Ford performance HP upgrade ? I'm running it and was installed by Ford dealer. I'll post after oil change, I only have 8,500 miles on it.

P.S. at 9000 it will be my 2nd oil change and I did first at 5k.. Since April 23 purchase of it.

I have not installed the HP performance upgrade yet. As of today, Pearl is at the dealership, they do give me a free loaner and said expected fix time was 2-3 weeks. Everything that’s been posted previously in these threads seem to be accurate. Appreciate the feedback everyone. Have a nice Thanskgiving
