So, I got tired of not having any visibility out the rear window and started looking for a solution. I didn't find any that fit what I was trying to accomplish so I fabricated a custom bracket.
I created a bracket that mounts BEHIND the spare and has an arm that sticks out through the wheel. The reason for this is that I wanted to make removal of the spare as painless as possible while at the same time giving me my window back.
Now, I just unplug the light and take it off the bracket. Then I remove the spare. I also wanted a clean wiring setup. I tied into the passenger side brake light wiring harness so that I could piggy back on the existing wiring harness in the tailgate for the factory light. Running lights, brake lights and ground were already there, I just brought the reverse light wire over from the taillight.
I used weatherproof connectors everywhere, especially the connection to the taillight. Reason being, if I ever needed to go back to stock I just unplug my reverse wire, connect the two parts of the original wire together and it's back to stock.
If anyone is interested, the bracket is powder coated stainless steel (I'm at the coast a lot) and I can get more made.
There is some bouncing when you close the tailgate but I had someone follow me on the road for a bit and they said they couldn't see it bouncing unless i hit a big bump.
Hope this helps someone else...I can't wait until people start selling tons of cosmetic mods like my Jeep friends can get. For now, we're getting creative.
